I was busy typing a blog post yesterday....
then...
black screen!
Totally black. Uh oh. Did the cord come out? It's battery is now worthless, it's drained, so I have to use the power cord with it. Nope, it's still plugged in.
So I closed the lid, well, that's stupid, shut the computer down, don't close the lid & wait for it to turn itself off! So I used the shut off button by holding it down till it cut off.
Then I popped the battery out of it & used my blow dryer on it with cool air for a few mins.
I left it sitting on top of my toilet all day after that -- not much space in a small ClassC!
Problem was, when this happened, the computer was very hot! Then I realized that the fan wasn't running.
Hopefully, the computer tried to shut itself off for protection. When I feel brave enough, I'll open it all up to try to access the fan to clean it. Why don't they make these things with easy fan access?? Those things get clogged with dust & well, if you live with pets, pet hair!
So in the meantime, I got out my old model-t rebuilt laptop & updated it. Which hasn't been used or updated since 8/12/12! I even had to reset the date & time to get it to work again. Tried updating it via air card - it's so old, it doesn't have wifi. I have a wifi card for it. I also have an aircard for internet connection. But with the aircard I have, it was still taking too long, so I ended up taking it into my friends house & directly connecting it to their modem. It ONLY took 11 hours to update! I was considering sticking it IN the toilet at one point!
So for now, I'm using the old laptop with my aircard to connect. Sure am glad I have that aircard! And that I've hanged onto the old laptop too. I've considered giving it away a few times, but knew I'd need it for a back up in case anything happened to the other laptop, which is probably aging out now too.
If you hear any flushing sounds during the reading of today's blog...don't blame me ;-)

Argg, computers, we all have a love/hate relationshoi with them.. I am keeping my old netbook around just in case this happens with my computer.
ReplyDeleteMy computer did what yours is doing a few weeks ago and I replace it with a new laptop. I bet it was nothing more than a needed inner cleaning. I have never gotten over this "hands off" when it comes to putters. I can fix about anything otherwise, but the minute something goes wrong with my computer, I figure I either have to replace it or take it to an expert. Even when all it might need is a little dusting and cleaning. Hmmmmmmm.
DeleteYou are probably right on the overheating. Mos CPU's have built in protection that will shut them down if they over heat. Hope it's that simple.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too. Will get to it soon to see. I also have a couple of geeky friends that fix computers for a living, so if I get scared of it,I can take it to them.
DeleteMy computer is old - still runs on Vista. And it gets really hot so I try to be aware of that and shut it down to let it cool off. Never thought about cleaning the fan. May have to do that.
ReplyDeleteMine runs on Vista too! I bought it smack before Win7 came out. Yes, check the fan. I know mine wasn't working right, I'd tap on it, then it would run. But I know it either needs a good cleaning or replaced. Now I'm running a rebuilt computer with a 2003 edition of XP ;-)
DeleteI forgot all about the need to clean that bottom half. Better get it done before I pack it up tonite for the journey. Hope that's all that wrong.
ReplyDeleteOh, you are leaving soon -- how fun!
DeleteUgh! I don't have a backup computer so if mine went down I would be dead in the water.
ReplyDeleteFan? There's a fan I should be cleaning? I don't think I have one of those. Oh, I must have since I've heard it running. Wonder where it is?
I did buy a makeup brush the other day so I could brush the crumbs off my keyboard without typing anything. What? You don't eat at your computer?
Linda, get some canned air to blow the keyboard & fan vents with. I'm pretty sure that my fan is clogged with hair & dust.Getting to it is scary though. Youtube again to the rescue! I looked at a video for my computer - at least it can be done...but needing to take things out is a bit scary.
DeleteI use my shop vac (have one of those little ones) to blow out my keyboard & fan vent. I'm too cheap to buy air.

ReplyDeleteThinking about computer crash is really bothersome, especially when you have limited knowledge about the system. I had the same experience as yours with my old lappy. I was in the middle of blogging when it suddenly shut down. Luckily, I got all my files stocked on my cloud storage so kept me from the hassle of recovering lost data.
