Opinions wanted on Painting Ellie's Decals

Hi Everyone,

As you know, Ellie, my motorhome is getting up there in years, but not in mileage since we sit so much!

Ever since I bought her, her decals were cracked, faded & well, not attractive.

I heard about spray paint that is rubberized. You spray it on & it sticks well. If you don't like it, you can simply peel it off.

I heard of this from a guy that did his hubcaps & that paint looks great on them!

So I thought this could be an easy solution for Ellie!

I did a mock up photo. I really want to paint in tan, but I could not get the color right on my color chart, so it looks yellow.

But I plan on doing tan, with a little bit of red accent. The black striping oddly has not faded, so it can stay as is.

Let me know what ya'll think please.

Before & current photo:

Repainted image - it turned yellow, but I want tan.

So what do ya'll think? I think the tan will brighten her up a little & the red is subtle, yet a bit of an accent.

  1. Hmmm you know I like them both, but more so the blue. Your rig is kept so clean and shiny it looks new anyway. I know you'll pick the one that suites your taste best.

    1. That was her good side, the bad side really looks bad. I can always change out the colors each year too! haha. However, I have no idea on how it will hold out either, so we'll see how this project ultimately goes. Thanks for your input!

    1. Thanks! Now to take a trip to the store to see what my real color options are!

  3. I like the red accent, but I am always partial to blue as a main color. But you see it in person so you will know what actually looks best. Good luck. I'm sure your color will turn out just beautiful.

  4. I think I like the blue better too but I know the need for changing and freshening things up so....
    Also, love the red!

  5. It would be great if it sticks well. best to choose the color yOU like. But if you ever plan on trading her in, it might be wise to just redo the blue. Be sure to share the results a year or so after you do it so we will know how it lasted. It might look great at first, but not so after a while, and if it is easy to remove, that would be good to know too.

We are all product testers for each other!

    1. Hi Merikay, there is such a low trade in value on my rig that I'd better off selling it outright. Which is what I plan to do when I am ready to upgrade one day. I thought I'd trade it in last year, got the old bait & switch pulled on me. They low balled my rig, tried to offer me the price of a Chevy engine (my rig with a Chevy engine has a lower value), mine has a Ford E350 engine. They would not consider that it had brand new tires, a new fridge, a new converter, etc. I'd pay a little more for a used rig if it came with upgrades! But the guy snidely said, it comes with all that. And he tried to high ball me on the rig I was interested in. Yes, hmmm, buy mine for way under the NADA value & sell me the bigger used rig for well ABOVE the NADA value. It needed work too. I was so angry when I left there.

  6. I hate to say this, but I like the blue better, too, and I'm not a blue person. I thought I'd like the tan better, but not in these photos. I agree, though, If I were you, I'd do the tan - you like that best and that is all that counts. I often get opinions, and they only help, they don't decide for me. I love this idea, though. My decals are all crazed, too.

    1. The color won't be that yellow color. My photo program would not do the tan right, it kept turning it yellow. I saw an image of an RV with the tan & black decals. It looked sharp. Haha, I actually saw one with yellow decals too, now that doesn't work for me!

  7. Really like the blue. How do you prep the surface prior to the new color?

  8. Thanks for your opinions, everyone. I do appreciate your input! The color shown above turned yellow, I want a tan color, but that was photo shopped in my photo program & the color just would not turn tan, no matter what I tried. The only prep is to wash the RV, then tape the other areas off that I don't want to paint. Simply spray the rubberized paint over the old decals. Since it's rubberized, if I have any over spill areas or don't like the color after all, it simply peels off. Unlike the old faded cracked decals, which I have to scrape or get chemicals to get rid of. From what I hear it's hard work, you also have to work with a hot hair dryer to remove them. So it seems a simple solution to just paint over them to see how that looks. If anything, it would eventually enhance the sale of the RV if I so choose to sell it in the future. Those decals are so bad that some RV parks might just turn my RV away. (not that I stay in many anyhow).

  9. I hope it all works out for you to make the RV look good. I guess I lucked out, my RV does not have those stripes on it. I have read a lot of complaints about those stripes, so I wonder why the manufacturers still put them on the RV's.

    1. Years ago, pin striping on cars used to be painted on. Decals just don't last long, so yes, why do they use them? I guess to attract people?
